サマーキャンプで、幼い少年二人がThe Smithsの曲を繰り返し繰り返し聞いて、意気投合後離ればなれに。ジョナサンはニューヨークへ、ジェイコブはフロリダへ。それが、ヴォーカルのジョナサン・ピアースとギタリストのジェイコブ・グラハムの初めての出会い、実質上のThe Drums の出発点である。その後ギタリストのアダムス・ケセラーがニューヨークに家族と引っ越したのをきっかけに、ジョナサンとめぐりあい、ELKLANDというバンドを結成する。州をまたいでもジョナサンとジェイコブは新しいバンドを立ち上げたいと連絡を取り合う。2009年に、ドラマーのコナー・ハンウィックが加わり、本格的にフロリダを拠点にThe Drums として始動する。彼らのデビュー作、SummertimeのEPのリリース以来、国際的にThe Drumsは脚光を浴びるようになる。シンプルな色あせたTシャツやチェック柄のシャツにジーンズを合わせたチャーミングな男の子４人組にあうと自然と何かいいことが夏に起こる予感がする。今回は、来日公演のためにきていた、ジェイコブとアダムに心地よい音楽の波を作るこつをきいた。

VHJ: 東京でのギグはいかがでしたか？
A: とても楽しかった。初めて訪れる国で演奏するのは本当に楽しい。英語が母国語ではないのに、僕たちの曲を一緒に歌ってくれるその瞬間は感動ものだし、すごく嬉しいよ。

VHJ:東京の観客の反応は、ニューヨークのファンと比べてどうですか？
A; 他のバンドのギグはどうかわかんないけど、僕たちのショーでは控えめだったかな。
J: うーん。ザ・ドラムスは、独自のライブのバイブがあって、それに惹き付けられる人が来てくれるんだと思う。音楽を聞きながら、踊って良い時間を過ごしたいって人が多い気がする。だからニューヨークとかでも、僕たちのファンは良い意味で控えめだと思うな。

VHJ: カラオケで歌う曲はなんですか？
J: Pet Shop Boys のAlways On Mind。
A:僕とコナーで the Mamas & the Papas のCalifornia Dreamin’を歌った。

VHJ:ポップからロックまでいろいろな要素を曲に混ぜてるように聞こえるのですか？ご自身でザ・ドラムスの音楽をどのように表現しますか？
A:繊細なロック、かな。
J:うーん。ポップミュージックとも言えるし。
A: ノスタルジック！

VHJ: 発売されたアルバムについて教えてください。アルバムを構成する際のテーマなどはありましたか？
A: がっちりとした具体的なテーマはなかったんだ。SummertimeというEPを出して、それが大反響で。アルバムでは、もっと視野をひろげたかったから固定的なテーマはなかった。ザ・ドラムスのやってきたことの集約と言った方がいいかな。本を章立てで読む感覚だよ。
J: そうだね。でも振り返って聞いてみると、なんか『ハート・ブロークン（胸が張り裂けそうな）』要素がたくさん入っている気がする。青春時代に味わう、心が痛む切ない気持ちのような。だから、もしかしたら、僕たちは『ハート・ブロークン』の固まりなのかもね。
A: 僕は幸せいっぱいだよ（笑）
J: そうだね。本当にアダムはラッキーだよ（笑）

VHJ:音楽は聞き手の事を考えて作りますか、それとももっと自己陶酔型ですか？
J: 後者！バンド結成当初から、僕らは音楽とはこうあるべきだと信じて作ってきたし、自分たちが聞いて納得のいく曲作りをしてきた。曲を作るときは、聞き手のことは全く考えず、自分たちがいいと思うものを作る。僕たちのファンはそれを理解して、そのように作られた曲に共感してくれる。自己陶酔型の自分たちの曲に共感してくれたファンたちとはより深いコネクションを感じる。
A: 自分たち中心の『方法』で人々を魅了すると、実は、自分よがりなものではないのもができたりするんだよね。
J: その通り。僕たちが聞き手を考えて人気を得ようとしたら、ファンの数は増えるのかもしれない。でも僕たちは、ファンの数が増えるよりも、自分たちのやり方や音楽を理解・共感してくれるファンを維持する方が大切。僕は、ファンとの間に『ギャング(遊び仲間)』に近い仲間意識があると思う。誰かが喧嘩をしたら、皆集合！！！みたいな。（笑）
A: はは。そうだね。

VHJ: エディ・スリマンと撮影した時のエピソードを教えてください。
A: エディは本当にクールだよ。バンドを結成してから、多くのフォトグラファーに撮られたけど、エディはありのままの僕たちを捉えてくれる。
J:そうそう。なにか指図されるのではなく、自然のザ・ドラムスらしい瞬間を捉えてくれるよね。

VHJ: エディが直接連絡とってきたのですか？
A: うん。彼がロサンゼルスの僕たちのショーを見に来て。その後、僕たちのホテルにきて、仲良くなったんだ。
J: 本当にカジュアルに、エディは僕たちのショーを気に入って写真を撮ってくれた。
A: エディが大切にしていることと僕たちの重視していることで共通している面がたくさんある気がする。

VHJ: ファッションと音楽に関連性はあると思いますか？それとも無関係であると願うときがありますか？
J:僕は関連性があると思うし、ファッションは大切な要素だと思う。最近のアーティストは、すべては音楽だけで、見た目を気にすることは音楽に集中していないというけど。僕は、音楽に真剣に取り組んでいるからこそ見た目も気にした方がいいと思う。自分たちのアルバムをデザインするのと同じようなもの。歴史の中で偉大で影響力のあったアーティスト達は、それぞれ独自のファッションをしていて、ビジュアルから音楽の感じが受け取れる。例えばRamones、The Beatles や the Blondiesとか。
A: Nirvanaもいい例だよね！
J: もしかしたら、僕たちは他の人よりも視覚的にものを捉えるのから、ファッションは僕たちの世界観を作るのに重要だと思う。スタイルが全くないバンドをみると何か抜けている気がするし。

VHJ:最近みておもしろかったyoutubeは何ですか？
A: 今さっきみたLet’s Go Surfing のオーケストラ版のyoutube。動画ではないんだけど、音楽がすごいおもしろい。西部の草原をたくさんの馬がを走っているイメージ。

J: 僕はThe Zombiesのテレビパフォーマンスをよく見るよ。ヴォーカルロッド・アージェントの存在が圧倒的。マイクから３メートルぐらい離れて歌ってるのを見たり。あの絵図らは印象的だよね。

A：僕は他のバンドのインタビュー動画もよくチェックする。この間The Doorsのインタビューですごいいいのを見つけた。
J:あと、僕は古い家族のホームビデオを見るのも大好き。今では出せない色合いとかノスタルジックな雰囲気なものは心惹かれる。

VHJ:今後の活動について教えてください。
A:ニューヨークに一度戻って、すぐにスイスにギグをしにいくよ。それからたくさんのフェスティバルに出演予定だよ。ヨーロッパの夏はフェスティバルシーズンだから。
J:グラストンベリーとかね
A:サマーソニックにも出演予定。日本に戻ってくるのを楽しみにしてる。今年は基本的にツアーで世界を飛び回るんだ。その合間合間に曲作りができたらいいなと思ってる。

At a summer camp, a pair of American kids ended up listening to the Smiths over and over again. The very first starting point of the Drums, singer Jonathan Pirece and guitarist Jacob Graham had met. Jonathan hooked up with guitarist Adam Kesseler in NY when his family moved in and put together a band called Elkland. Reach across the states, Jonathan and Jacob decided to start a new band. It was just a year ago The Drums came in to the world when drummer Conner Hanwick joined. Since the release of their debut Summertime EP, the Drums have been into the international limelight .Meeting four charming young generation in their simple pastel t-shirts and check shirt with jeans, you feel something good will happen in the summer. Jacob and Adam spoke to VHJ of their way to make simple but unique music waves.

VHJ: How was your show in Tokyo?
A: So much fun. So cool to come to a country that you never been and perform English is not even their native language, and they are singing our song. We are so flittered.

VHJ: What is the difference the audience of NY from that of Tokyo?
A: mmm I think I feel it is a little less inhabited here.i don’t know the other shows but as far as our show.
J: A typical crowds in NY are reserved I think.the drums persifcly, we have a certain vibe of show and attracts certain type of people. It seems like the people who want to come out and dance and have some time of fun.

VHJ:What song will you sin the karaoke box？
J: Always on my mind, by Pet Shop Boys
A: Me and Cornor did Calrornia Dreamin’ by the Mama s & the Papas

VHJ: You seem to put many elements in music(upbeat, pop, and rock and roll)How would you describe your music ?
A: I guess you could say more of a sensitive side on rock and roll.
J: I think ammm just a Pop music..
A: Nostalgic.

VHJ: Please tell us about the album. I like how streams of ideas throughout What is the theme of your album.
A: We didn’t really have a super concrete theme, we put out this EP called ‘Summer time’ and that was really dramatic. Then with the album we wanted broaden the picture of what we really are. It is not really a theme. Putting every pasts of the Drums together. Its more like a ‘Read the books in the chapters.’
J: Yeah, but looking back on it, and being told it seems that there is a lot of heartbreak all over it.. like teenageheartbreak so that’s maybe who we are. Just a banch of broken heart.
A: My heart is full
J: You are the only one haha
You are very lucky

VHJ: While you create your music do you think about what the audience wants to hear? Or is it more self-aborbed?
J: Defenitly the second. We only think about and its always been from the beginning, just write the music the way we think want what music should be and to please ourselves. Beacause when you do that your music becomes as potent as it can be. Well we are not thinking about anyone but ourselves when we write music, our fans and the people listen to our music understand that. And because we do that way they are able to connect even more.
A: Seduce people in a selfish manner it sometimes make more a self less product.
J: May be if we did think about other people, may be we have more funs but we rather have fans who really understand than a lot of fans. Our fans are really important for us. I feel like we are GANG with them almost. We got in a fight and we have each others balls.
A: Totally

VHJ: What was it like to be taken pictures by Hedi Slimane?
A: It was cool. We have been taken a lot of pictures since we got in a banc. Hedi, he has never tried to do anything.
J: He always captures the moment. Flying the wall and he just wanted to capture. He is really cool.

VHJ: Did he contact you guys directly?
A: Yeah he came to our concernt in LA, He came alone with his camera and took some pictures there and then he came to our hotel afterward and we became friends.
J: I guess he came to our show and he liked it. Its cool.
A: A lot of thing he values ethitectly we found we have so much in common.

VHJ:Do you believe there is a relation between music and fashion? Or do you wish sometimes they are completely separated?
J:I do think there is a relationship and I think it is really important. I think a lot of modern musicians will say it is all about music and if you care how you look then you are taking off from music or something like that. But you do pay attention how you look cause you take music even more seriously. You want to convey the music to the way you look. I think it is pretty the same to designing the album cover… I think a lot of bands through out the history who wore the most potent , you really just could see them and you hear their music and you can see the picture. Like the Beatles, the Blondies and even the Ramoons. They have really specific look. It just complets the picture. To me, if you don’t pay attention to what you wear at all, it feels like there is something missing. And harder to understand the personality.
A: And even Nirvana, you know.
J: Yeah I suppose we are really visual and a lot of bands don’t feel that way. It helps to complete the whole world. And I guess you can guess what our music like from the way we dress.. We dress really simple and our music is very simple. Do something really simple but make a bit interesting.

What is the most interesting youtube you have seen recently?
A: We were just watching the orchestra performance of ‘Let’s go surfing ’ there is no video. But the music sounds really cool. Like a western… banch of horse running

J: I always like to watch home videos where people go to nantake and seas
Things like that because they are really lovely.
A; I look up the interviews of all the bands. I looked a great one with the Doors.
J: I like looking at live TV performances of the Zombies as they have a really interesting presence.

Whats on your agenda for the next few monthe?
A: We will be back in NY and they will fly to Switerzaland. And we are going to bunch of festivals. Cause in summer is a festival season.
J: We will perform at Glastonbury too.
A: Yeah, and e cant wait to come back to Japan for summer sonic. Touring basically till the end of the year. And hopefully we can write music in between.

「ルイ・ヴィトン神戸メゾン」の誕生を記念し、３月３日オープニングパーティが開かれた。神戸のランドマーク的存在であった旧「オリエンタルホテル」跡地にできたホテル・商業複合ビル「神戸旧居留地25番地館」の１、２階に登場した日本初となる「ルイ・ヴィトンメゾン」は、中央の螺旋階段が特徴的な明るく開放的な空間。特に注目したいのは、メゾンを囲むように配されたNY在住のアーティスト、アリソン・ショッツによる長さ67フィートにおよぶアートワーク。レンズと鏡によって作られた彫刻は、ドレスのスパンコールのように輝いている。
神戸メゾンでのオープニングセレモニー、カクテルレセプションに続き場所を移して行われたパーティでは、ソウル出身のWINTERPLAYによるジャズ演奏、邦楽演奏家／日本舞踏家の麻生花帆やホセ・アントニオ・アセベドと伊集院史郎らによるパフォーマンス、そしてDJ ALEX from TOKYOによる音楽が。港町・神戸にふさわしく、インターナショナルな夜をゲストたちは楽しんだ。

On 3rd of March, the grand opening party was held to celebrate the 'Louis Vuitton Kobe Masion', the first Kobe maison in Japan . This maison was rebuilt on the site of Oriental Hotel, which used to be the landmark of Kobe. Circular stairs located in the middle and the wide open space were alluring. These amusing sites appeared on the first and second floor of the commercial building called 'Kobe Kyukyoryuchi 25th Buliding ' Once you step in, you will see this 67 feet wide artwork by Alyson Shotz, an artist from NY, surrounded in the store. Made of mirror and lense, it glitter as a spangle dress.
At the opening ceremony, followed by the cocktail reception in the maison, a musician from Seoul, Winterplay, played jazz. Then Kaho Asou(Japanese choreographer/ musician), Jose Antonio Acevedo and Shiro Ijuin did a one-off live performance, which boosted the party mood. The music selection of DJ Alex from Tokyo lifted up the crowd as well. As fitted the seaport, Kobe, all the guest spend a international special night.
